Catherine C. Mendicino

January 13, 1926 — May 20, 2017

Catherine Savage Mendicino, 91, affectionately known as “Kay” or “Cal” to her family and friends, passed on to her heavenly home on May 20, 2017, supported and surrounded by her loving family. Born January 13, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John Savage and Anna Doyle Savage of Charleroi. At the age of 15, she met the love of her life Joseph “Joe” Mendicino, now deceased, in a chance encounter walking down the street of her hometown. They exchanged wedding vows on August 26, 1947 and enjoyed nearly 61 years of married life, most of it residing in North Belle Vernon where they lovingly raised their four sons. In addition to being a homemaker, Catherine was employed by Hills Department Store for eighteen years. She was a member of Saint Sebastian RC Church, the CDA, Valley of Hope Charismatic Prayer Community, and also volunteered her time and talents to several charitable activities. Catherine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who loved spending time with her family and lifting them up in prayer. Hosting holiday meals, Sunday dinners, and daily lunches for family, friends and neighbors were a meaningful and important part of her and Joe’s life. Catherine also enjoyed playing table games, especially Rummikub and Shanghai, and watching EWTN and sports on television. Winter trips to Florida with her husband Joe and his sister Teresa and her husband Don made for some of her happiest years. Catherine also had a great fondness for newborn babies and a soft heart for dogs, particularly her canine pal George that she couldn’t resist feeding from the table. She will always be remembered for her kindness along with her gentle and humble spirit.

She is survived by four sons and two daughters in law Michael Mendicino of Pine Hurst, NC, Mark & Judy Mendicino of Rostraver Twp., David Mendicino of Speers, James & Melcena Mendicino of West Newton;  daughter in law Francine Mendicino; 10 grandchildren Jason Mendicino, Domenic Mendicino, Michael Mendicino, Joseph Mendicino, Amy Mendicino, Laura Mendicino, Sarah Lewis, Rebecca Krepps, Jamie Mendicino, Jared Mendicino; 15 great grandchildren Sonny Mendicino, Jacob Mendicino, Ethan Mendicino, Abigail Mendicino, Michael Mendicino, Corinne Mendicino, Kate Mendicino, Luka Mendicino, Vayla Mendicino, Vianna Mendicino, Wyatt Jennings, Holden Johnson, Lola Johnson, Bodie Johnson, Lucy Lewis and a god daughter Merrie Lu 'Sissy' Hewitt.  She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph  Mendicino, son Joseph Mendicino, grandson Daniel J.
