Mary ShafferMarch 26, 1919 ~ April 14, 2017 (age 98)
On April 14, 2017, Mary went to join the Lord and the other members of her family. Mary C. Savarino Shaffer ,98, of Belle Vernon, died Friday, April 14,2017 at South Hills Rehab and Wellness Center in Canonsburg, Pa. Born March 26,1919 in Monessen, she was the daughter of the late George and Angelina Alfronte Savarino. She resided in Belle Vernon for 65 years. She was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Belle Vernon. She was married to Calvin L. Shaffer who died in 1966. Mary was mostly a Mother. She raised 2 daughters after the death of her husband. She belonged to and was an officer in the former American Legion Auxiliary Post 659. She did many volunteer hours working for the veterans. For many years, she would be seen selling poppies for the veterans at the former PNC Bank. She was president of that organization for 9 years. She also belonged to the former Belle Vernon and Fayette City Golden Agers. Her angelic voice could be heard at St Sebastian’s in the funeral choir. She also sang in the former M & M's singing group, which performed around the valley. She loved to cook, bake and sew. Many people were recipients of her delicious dishes. Mary also enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards with her daughter. She was an avid Steeler Fan and enjoyed watching every game.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Shaffer of Belle Vernon and her daughter, Lisa Shaffer Harshman of Alvin, Texas. She is survived by 2 grandchildren, Cayce Harshman and his wife Jerusha of Pearland, Texas and Nika and her husband Brain Adkins of Alvin, Texas. Mary also had 3 great grandchildren, Caleb Adkins, Caden Harshman and Jacob Harshman. She is also survived by many neices & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Angeline Savarino. Sisters Jennie Dalfonso, Josephine Seese, Julia Indorante and Rose DeCarlo. Brothers Mario Savarino, Joseph Savarino, Domineck Savarino and James Savarino. She was the last surviving member of her family. She also was preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Gianiris.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Parzynski Funeral Home & Cremations, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon 724-929-6183. Prayers of Transfer will be held Thursday at 9:30 am in the funeral home followed by funeral mass at 10:00 am at St. Sebastian R.C. Church with the Rev. Msgr. Roger A. Statnick Pastor as celebrant. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
Members of St. Sebastian parish will pray the rosary for the departed soul of Mary Shaffer Wednesday at 3 pm in the funeral home.
