Mary Jo Barker Zagar, 71, of Perryopolis, born April 11, 1946 passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 following a year long battle with lung cancer and heart disease. She is predeceased by her loving parents Edward A. ‘Ted’ and Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Murphy Barker.
She is survived by her supportive brother & sister in law Edward A. 'Buzz' Barker Jr. & Mary of Waterford, VA, nephews Eddie Barker, Clayton Dietze; aunt Mary Jane Barker of Monessen along with numerous dear friends and members of her church family at the Perryopolis First Christian Church. Mary Jo will be missed by many, especially her faithful loyal pup Marley.
Mary Jo graduated from Bel Mar High School and California State University of PA. She had a successful 30 years teaching career with the Yough school District and taught elementary and middle school students. Mary jo had a passion for history and was especially interested in Native American Indians and often supported their causes. She was on two bowling leagues for many years at the Perryopolis Sons of Italy and Lynnwood Bowling Lanes. Currently, Mary Jo was an Elder in her church, the Perryopolis First Christian Church. She contributed many hours of volunteer service there.
A memorial visitation will be held Saturday from 10-11 am at the Perryopolis First Christian Church, 307 Independence St. followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Melissa Snyder of Perryopolis First Christian Church officiating. The family wishes to thank Mary Jo’s friends and neighbors for their tireless caring, helpful and loving support.
