Peter Edward Hegyes, 80, of Perryopolis passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Uniontown Hospital. Born July 21, 1943 in Linn, Redstone Township, PA he was the son of the late Pete and Anne Adams Hegyes of Layton Hill, Dawson, PA. A resident of Perryopolis for the last 56 years, he belonged to St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church where he and his wife, Rouena Faye Newport Hegyes, were married. They would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on November 04 this week.

Pete graduated from Mary Fuller Frazier High School with the Class of 1961 and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served four years in the AP( Air Police) stationed in Roswell, New Mexico. Following the military, he pursued a lifelong career with U.S. Steel Corporation. He worked at Christy Park Works and National Tube Works both in McKeesport, Homestead Steel Works, Homestead, and Irvin Works, West Mifflin from where he eventually retired. Just months after retiring, he took a role as a consultant for AK Steel Corporation, first in Evansville, Indiana and later in Chicago, Illinois. After nearly 40 years in the steel industry, he made this his final retirement.

Over the years, Peter created countless cherished memories with his beloved family, from vacations to the ocean beaches of Florida and Cancun, as well as trips with his wife to the casinos of Las Vegas. His most treasured moments were spent watching his children and grandchildren grow up, and more recently welcoming great-grandchildren into the world.

Peter was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Perryopolis V.F.W., Sokols Club, and Moose Lodge. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and golfing. He spent many seasons with his buddies enjoying nature in places like the hills of Tennessee and across the Midwest. At home, he cherished riding the family horses through the miles of woodland trails of Layton Hill where he grew up. His greatest passion was riding his Harley Davidson, whether alone in the mountains of Fayette County, or alongside fellow riders across the country. “Riding on the wind” on his Harley brought him immense joy! Now, his spirit is free and no longer confined to this earthly realm, allowing him to fly anywhere he wishes. “Ride, my brother….ride! See you on the other side. Love you always! “

Pete is survived by his wife, Faye Newport Hegyes, mentioned previously, their three children: Mark Hegyes (Lisa Lawrence Hegyes), Kelli Hegyes Ohler (Rob Ohler), and Dawn Hegyes Shanefelter (the late Thomas Shanefelter, Jr.); four grandchildren: Aaron Hegyes, Megan Hegyes Leonard (Dustin Leonard), Darin Ohler (Lauren), and Robert Ohler; two great grandchildren: Natalee Ohler and Griffyn Leonard, all of Perryopolis. He also is survived by three siblings: Richard Hegyes (the late Cheryl Pravlik Hegyes) of Mount Pleasant, Penny Hegyes of Perryopolis, and Robert Hegyes of Layton Hill, Dawson; two nephews : Mike Hegyes (Melaney) and their son Michael of Mount Pleasant, Scott Hegyes (Cliff) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and one niece: Danielle Hegyes of Perryopolis. Sadly, he was preceded in death by niece, Patricia Homsher of Akron, Ohio.

In accordance with Peter’s wishes, a private memorial service will be planned for a later date, accompanied by the spreading of his ashes. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the condolences, sympathy, and prayers from all who knew and loved him. They offer their sincere thanks and wishes for blessings and peace.
